The Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico. In particular, the Central and South regions of Mexico and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the US. It is also acknowledged internationally in many other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

It occurs on November 2nd when the dead have divine permission to visit their relatives and friends. Mexicans decorate their homes with flowers, candles, and incense, celebrating this visit with food, music and their favorite sweets. In their streets, you'll find parades of people who dress up in skull masks, wear clothes with painted skeletons and fantasize about death. This holiday also brings one of the characters of Mexican popular culture to the surface: the Catrina Skull.
