The weekend is almost here, it is the perfect opportunity to gather your friends, family, loved one or just by yourself and go on a weekend getaway! Weekends are a time to let loose, relax and enjoy yourself but who says you can't get something back in return? Like a peak into Irelands traditions and history? If you are looking for a city in Ireland steeped in history then Galway is the place to be! The city is characterized by its "Irishness"  with its Irish music, dancing traditions and its people still using the Irish language - even if it's only the minority -. While being a major center for Irish traditional music it has inspired many artists to write music about it, with one of the latest and most notable song written and performed by Ed Sheeran "Galway Girl". If that's not enough to get you to visit Galway, consider this; Galway city, known as the Cultural Heart of Ireland will be the European Capital of Culture along with Rijeka, (Croatia) in 2020! Moreover, Galway throws countless festivals and events, among them Tulca Festival of Visual Arts held in November.  What's more? Galway, in 2007 held the title of one of the eight "sexiest cities" in the world, followed by its 2014 title of one of the five greatest cities to visit!  Read on for a few of the options you have in Galway!

The largest native species aquarium in Ireland with more than 60 exhibits and even more Sea life species. A family friendly environment, with fish feeding tours and organizing birthday parties, promising an unforgettable experience!  


2. Athenry, Athernry Castle

Atherny is found 23km from Galway city. It is a medieval town, and the only one in Ireland whose surrounding walls are still visible to the human eye. Athenry Castle, a tower surrounded by defensive walls, has a unique decoration on its doorway and an audio-visual room.       


3. Galway Bay

Galway Bay is a large bay on the west coast of Ireland. An ideal drive for those traveling with a car, is from Galway's coast road to Spiddal, enjoying the splendid view and a perfect spot to watch the sun go down.

This is a museum made of the Galway heritage and remarkable Irish artist. Its aim is to give the tourist an insight on Galway city. In addition to the exhibits, one can find there Pádraic Ó Conaire's statue, the silver Civic Sword and an exquisite café!    

5. Barna Woods

Barna Woods is the perfect spot for nature lovers! Its beautiful landscape, and mixture of broadleaf woodland is what one is looking for to escape from the busy streets, and the polluted air.

6. Circle of Life Commemorative Garden

What is so special about this Garden is the purpose it serves. It is a place for remembrance and tribute to the generous spirits of organ donors. Its aura, design and symbolism promise a memorable visit!            


7.  Eyre Square

Eyre Square is an open rectangular park located in the city center. It was renamed Kennedy Memorial Park after his visit in Galway City in 1963. There one can relax or view the many attractions.     


8. St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church

Founded in 1320, this church is the largest medieval church in Ireland that is still in use on daily basis! A church dedicated to St. Nicholas, from whom, St. Clause's story derives. With its detailed carvings, detailed sculptures, majestic windows and cozy interior, is a must visit when in Galway!
