Known for its beaches, the beautiful sea and its resorts, Ayia Napa is a town on the southern coast of Cyprus. Its name comes from a Monastery that is located in the centre of the town, which today is surrounded by clubs and bars.
Ayia Napa is home of the largest tourist resort in Cyprus, with 27000 tourist bed capacity and more than 150 hotels and apartments of all sizes.
The town is full of cultural sites and museums; The main cultural site is the Medieval Monastery which consists of an archaeological site of ancient rock-cut tombs, a sanctuary and evidence of funeral pyres. The town has two main marine museums which are incredible to visit, where you can find marine fossils, marine heritage of Cyprus and even a full-scale replica of a merchant ship from 300BC.
Ayia Napa also has a beautiful sculpture park with more than 140 sculptures, recognized as one of the most beautiful sculpture parks in the world.
The Ayia Napa Festival was first held in September 1985 and has been established as an annual event since, usually over the last weekend of September. It takes place in Sepheris Square in Ayia Napa Monastery. The festivities reflect the historic, cultural and agricultural traditions of Ayia Napa and Cyprus as a whole. The programme includes theatrical performances, operas, concerts and Cypriot and foreign folk dancing.
Another getaway you can do in Cyrprus, right by Ayia Napa, is Protaras, where you will also find those amazing white sand beaches with beautiful blue-sky waters, but the main difference between these two incredible destinations is the vibe of the place.
Protaras has a smaller and less known night life, attracting more families and tourists who want to have a relaxing holiday. At Protaras you will have a sensation of rest and the nightlife consists of going to a great restaurant or a walk along the beach.
