Day 11: Meet Harriet at Charleville Castle ... 11/10/2018

Charleville Castle was built in 1798 by Charles William Bury, the Earl of Charleville. The Castle is situated in County Offaly in the Ireland’s oldest oak woods where druids were staying.

Erected as a gothic-revival architecture building, Charleville Castle was built in fourteen years! In the middle of the wood, you can recognise the Castle thanks to its towers, one is bigger than the other and another one is taller than the other ones. In the Castle you would immediately see the huge staircase which is really imposing. The architecture is not the only thing that would leave a mark in your memory, you may live weird experiences inside, in fact the Castle, like a lot of other castle of this age, is pretended to be haunted...

In Charleville Castle, you would maybe glimpse Harriet ghost. But who’s she? Harriet was the youngest daughter of the third Earl of Charleville. One evening, the family was starting to have dinner but Harriet had to go to wash her hands before. She didn’t want to go because it was far away. She had to and go upstairs. After having washing her hands she decided to make a grand entrance: she jumped on the balustrade and started sliding. Unfortunately, she skidded and fall from the top of the stairs into the empty space. Since this terrible evening, Harriet is haunting the Castle. Some of the visitors had said they heard someone laughing, singing, crying or screaming. Some tourists even say you can see her on their pictures!

Charleville Castle is the best place if you want to discover a splendid gothic castle, and maybe you may hear Harriet...
