According to Mark Twain, “India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only." 

Here are some facts that you should know about their culture before going there.


  • India is the second most populous country in the world 

  • Hindi and English are the official languages in India but the government recognize 17 others languages that’s why there is about 1650 dialects spoken in the country. 

  • They had their Independence Day on August, 15th, 1947 

  • More than a million Indians are millionaire even if some cities are known for its poverty 

  • Indian people prefer to splash water with the left hand in the appropriate direction to clean their ass because they found that the toilet paper is repellent. That’s why left hand is considered unclean and they never used it for eating. 

  • This country has the one of the world’s highest rates of abortion  

  • The Indian flag is composed of 3 horizontal bands: saffron represented the courage and the sacrifice, white is for truth and peace, green symbolized the faith, fertility and chivalry. The wheel spinning in the centre was replaced by a wheel of life due to their Independence. 

  • They had the one of the largest human congregation on the Earth: the Kumbh Mela, a huge Hindu religious festival which is visible from the space because of the crowd. 

  • They also had the world’s largest movie industry in Mumbai named Bollywood: the “B” come from Bombay, the former name for Mumbai. 

  • In India, the Lotus is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. There is a “Bahai’i house” which significate “Lotus Temple” in Delhi, in which we can find a gigantic Lotus with 27 petals covered in marble. 

  • The national sport in India is the cricket. 

  • Marigold flowers are used for Hindu marriage because it’s a symbol of good future and happiness 

  • The national fruit in India is Mango and there is also a national bird which is Peacock.


  • Contrary to French country, Indian people traditionally wear white for funeral instead of black. 

  • The Taj Mahal “Crown Place” was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. It is the most visited monuments in the world. 

  • Dancing is the most developed art in India because of its expressive hand movements: the type of dance varies by region. 

  • There are 6 seasons: Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer monsoon and Winter monsoon.

  • India produced 70% of the world’s spices. 

  • There is a spa only for elephants at Punnathoor Cotta Elephant Yard Rejuvenation Centre in Kerala: elephants are a symbol of intellectual strength, and sturdy earthy mental strength. It is a sacred animal and is considered as a representation of the living incarnation of Ganesha, the most important of all gods who is invoked before any other gods.
